Wouldn’t it be great if we could all have a personal stylist, unfortunately for most of us we simply can’t afford that luxury. That doesn’t, however, mean we have to look bad in what we wear! Follow these simple steps to creating a flattering wardrobe for yourself.

1. Dress in a way that shows you value yourself.

This may seem an odd tip, but too often people dress poorly because they don’t have self confidence. It may be that a person dresses to get attention in revealing clothes. This will certainly get attention but it won’t be the right type. Others dress in tracky-dacks and baggy shirts because they feel ashamed of their figure and want to cover it up. When you put on your next outfit show the world that you have worth; don’t be ashamed to look beautiful!

2. Become an illusionist.

Know that each person has assets and flaws! So don’t tell yourself that you can’t look good because you aren’t a super model. Start by writing down a list of your physical assets and flaws. Then, take some time to think about how to accentuate and disguise each of these. For instance, if you have great arms but troublesome thighs, show of those arms with a sleeveless top and disguise those thighs with a dark colour. Dressing well is often about creating optical illusion, we want to enhance what we have and conceal what we don’t like.

3. Know Your Colours

Coco Chanel says, “The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” If you can learn to apply this tip when dressing it will make the world of difference to your appearance. So how do you know what colours look good on you? Start by taking note of what colours attract compliments from others. If you can think of 3-5 colours that get you positive comments then you can build your wardrobe around them.

4. Just because it is in fashion doesn’t mean you should wear it.

So many people put emphasis on looking trendy and forget about looking good. Of course we don’t want to look completely ignorant when it comes to fashion but be aware that not every trend is for you. For instance; skinny jeans have been in for a few years but they do not flatter all figure types. So when it comes to shopping for new items ask yourself, “Does this show off my assets and hide my imperfections?” “Do these colours suit me?” If not, then don’t buy them!

5. Find Your Own Style

Whether it’s classic, sporty, gypsy, preppy or hipster do your best to choose a style that suits you and stick to it. Many people wear a myriad of styles because they look great on others and consequently end up with a very unclear direction for their own personal style. So find your own unique look that suits you, then work it!
