Best Board Shorts? Sydney label Venroy takes the world by storm
The best board shorts for this summer? It looks like the vote is for Sydney-based label Venroy, taking the world by storm with their above the knee, retro-style board shorts.
Venroy putting Australian designers on the map
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a start-up Aussie brand succeed in the fashion industry, particularly world-wide. Now with stores in New York, L.A. and Tokyo, it is pretty clear that Venroy have not only succeeded but simply do make the best board shorts.
What makes them different to other brands? Apart from being extremely well-made and sporting unique, retro prints that are a pleasant departure from the stock-standard neon, cartoonish prints we have become accustomed to from major surf labels, they are short. That’s right guys, the best board short around right now involve you showing some knee and even a little thigh.
U.S. put the ‘s’ in success
So how has Venroy soared so high, so fast, to be given the world-wide nod for the best board shorts around? The two Sydney boys behind the label, Sean Venturi and Theo Smallbone are two smart guys. “We wanted to capture the northern hemisphere summer and in my view, Australians only really support a brand once it is supported overseas.” Sean told the Financial Review. So the boys got on a plane and took their board shorts to the U.S.
After being knocked back time and time again because of the shortness of the shorts – Americans will only wear board shorts below the knee they were told – they got their break. One of California’s most famous fashion retailers, Fred Segal, agreed with the boys that theirs were the best board shorts they’d ever seen.

The place in which Venroy board shorts are the most popular right now? California. But the two Sydney boys behind the label, Sean Venturi and Theo Smallbone said that they are seeing more Aussie guys sporting their wares on the beach at Bondi and even in the surf.
With features in The AUstralian Finacial Review & GQ Magazine, we doubt it will take Aussie men long to start showing some knee.
