A self proclaimed chunky shoes fanatic, Ella Yelich O’Connor, or Lorde as she is known in pop culture, has proven herself as a member of the fashion aristocracy.

Despite being only 17 years old, she shows a level of integrity that some of the established thespians severely lack. She manages to incorporate in her art the anxieties of a teenager and the contemplativeness of a seasoned epicurean. But even more unique than her electric and hypnotic pop sound is her style, a kaleidoscope of seemingly incompatible influences and inspirations.

Admittedly, no one would care if Lorde came out on stage dressed in a potato sack, it would still be as enchanting and amazing as it is when she comes out wearing those goth/princess inspired dresses of hers. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to see someone who challenges the typical pop visual aesthetic-booty hugging shorts, crop tops and the luscious dance routines.

Clad in a black dress and chunky Oxford shoes, wearing her signature multiple rings and oxblood lipstick, Lorde takes center stage with only her voice in the spotlight. Even Chanel designer and undisputed genius Karl Lagerfield pronounced the singer as his “passions”, saying that her dulcet tones are a source of inspiration. Not bad for a 17 year old from Devonport, New Zealand. No wonder that the Topshop store, Gowings Building 45 Market Street even has a whole range of clothes, that are sure to make one look like Lorde’s doppelganger.

Her signature look is achieved by layering a mesh black top over a structured bodice or a crop top. Add an oversized leather and shearling jacket so comfort and freedom of movement is ensured. Never the one to shy away from daring looks, Lorde is not afraid to add just a touch of glitz to her outfits; be it in the form of bedazzled nails or a see through sparkling net-blouse. Her outfits are reminiscent of Morticia Adams, with their dramatic flair and goth chic; but the black plastic chocker that she so often dons, remind us that after all, she is a child of the ‘90s.

So where does such a unique individual finds inspiration when it comes to style? In a recent interview, Lorde confessed that she is most definitely a feminist and she likes clothes that showcase strength. That’s why her brand of choice is Comme des Garcons and in terms of silhouette, she prays at the altar of David Bowie.

What is  her favorite way of replenishing her wardrobe? Op shopping, as in opportunity shopping. For the uninitiated, this is similar to thrift shopping; only the actual stores are run by churches and all the proceeds go to the respective parish. It seems as if Lorde has found a way to practice the moderation she teaches in her hit single “Royals”, staying away from the lavishness, excess and diva-fits so customary in a pop-star.

Now if you are one of the millions of people that resonate with the young singer’s vibe, you better start perusing Topshop and Asos, because that’s where you can find something that at least approached Lorde’s level of originality. Of course, if you are a purist, then head over to your closest vintage shop and get digging. And remember, individuality is a powerful thing, when done right. Just look at Lorde.
