Interviews Dominic Rolfe

What would you do if you were Lord Mayor for a day?We asked some Sydneysiders for their action plans.Jordon Dionatos/18/student"I'd try to find more job opportunities for homeless people so that they could be a kitchen hand or something similar. And I'd help provide places for them to wash and store their belongings."Alex O'Dea/17/student"I'd make sure there were more buses and faster buses; I waited for ages for a bus this morning. And I'd make everything cheaper, especially food and transport. The city's such an expensive place to come to."Maximilian/42/fashion designer"I would like to see more fostering of an independent, experimental spirit. I would encourage art with lots of small-budget arts projects that anyone can be involved with."Richard Schellbach/36/financial analyst"Get rid of the monorail. It's an eyesore. The tracks look like a permanent piece of scaffolding. It links areas that no one cares about, it's noisy overhead and, if it's raining, it sprays water everywhere." Shirley Roach/62/retired director"I'd take the cars out of the city. We'd have to improve the transport system but the cycleways are a start. It's fabulous when there are areas to just walk and where it's inviting just to be there." Christie Xiberras/32/financial analyst"Make sure things are open later. Unlike other global cities, not so much here is open at night. There's just drinking at pubs. Shops and galleries and things like that should be open at night."John Bartik/30/Anglican minister"From buskers to music in cafes, I'd make sure there was more culture on the street. Musos can often only play in certain clubs but making it easier for them to play on the streets would be great."Dennis Partridge/58/semi-retired"I would make transport cheaper. It's ridiculously priced. There should be more free buses, like there are in Perth and Adelaide, so people visiting don't spend all their money on getting around."
