There are a few things to consider when deciding what to wear to your work Christmas party and they aren’t all about whether green and red should not, under any circumstances ever be worn together.

We have come up with some handy tips and DO’s & DON’T’s you need to go through before you party with your co-workers to make sure you survive looking swell.

The Little Black Dress can be super-casual or super-dressy

Casual or dressy?

Hopefully it will be pretty clear what to wear to your work Christmas party by the venue and your workplace but if in doubt, there are ways to dress in between.

Ladies, as our messiah Karl Lagerfield once said “One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress.” This is what  to wear to your work Christmas party,  and it will always work. It need not be super-dressy, but if it’s black, it can be. Throw a statement necklace and some red lipstick in your handbag just in case and you are set to go.

Guys, sorry but you have to admit you have it easier. You can walk the line very easily when it comes to what to wear to your work Christmas party in slick jeans and a tee, just bring a blazer on nice button-up shirt to throw over the top just in case. Still feeling challenged? Check our some tips on ‘mashion‘ (man fashion).

Guys,can do casual/dressy super easy

1 Shower, wash your hair, put on deodorant. Obvious to most people, yes but we mean even if you are a brick layer elephant washer, this is necessary.

2 Even if it a super casual affair, make an effort with your clothes. Iron, wear matching colours, etc. If it’s dressy, the same applies but with lot’s more pressure.

3 Be yourself. Wear something you actually like, a tried & true outfit that can be dressed up or down easily, just have some accessories on hand to dress it up more if necessary.

1 Wear too much make-up/perfume/cologne/hair goo

2 Be slack. Unless you are, which would go against point 2 of the above Do’s.

3 Try something new. Wear something you are uncomfortable in or that may be inappropriate and you will have heart palpitations and sweaty palms all night.

DO or DON’T?

This is a very important decision that involves careful consideration when deciding what to wear to your work Christmas party, particularly considering the type of work place you are in. It is tempting to want to dress up in your best outfit, particularly if your workplace is the kind where you have to wear a uniform or dull office wear.

It is important you to remember however, that these are people you will be back at work with tomorrow. This is a work party so by all means be you, just no the ‘you’ that will get you fired or have your desk relegated to the mail room.

1 Wear something awesome if you like someone in your office. There is no point in us telling you otherwise. Waste of type.

2 Wear something that really displays your personality if you usually have to wear a uniform or dreary office clothes, but do think carefully on how much you want to give away about your ‘personality’ to ‘those people’. The onsie comes to mind again.

3 Try and mix the two looks to achieve the perfect balance. That way you will be looking modestly hot.

1 Unless it is a work party that is actually also a hen’s or bucks night, do not wear anything remotely like you would wear to such an occasion. Period.

2 If you are going for the modest look, avoid looking like a drab hobo that doesn’t care. You still need to follow the DO’s listed in dressing up or down.

3 Refer to the last DON’T above. Too much makeup perfume/cologne is not hot. Or modest. In fact it is always a DON’T.

This could happen. In fact it is very likely…

Notice this is not a question. Let’s be blunt parties can get…a little crazy/messy/so boring that you have to drink  a couple more beers to make everyone seem more interesting. Work parties are no different, so you need to take this into account when you choose what you wear to your work Christmas party can get

If you expect that the occasion is going to end in people seeing double, forgetting partner’s names and perhaps letting that co-worker they have politely said hi to in the elevator all year know just what the think of them, you need to be dressed accordingly.

1 Wear occasion-appropriate clothes. i.e. If you are going to restaurant that specializes in ribs maybe leave that white/dress at home, regardless if bibs are provided or if you are going to the beach wear a

bathing suit

    , not a onsie.

2 Wear something nice so that when you tell your co-worker you think they have the personality of a piece of chalk, they are too dazzled by your outfit to take offence.

3 Wear full-coverage underwear. This goes for both of you ladies and gentlemen. There is no telling when an impromptu swim in the ocean, pool/fountain. Also important for any indecent exposure moments (see example below in Don’ts).

Wearing these? DON’T

1 Wear heels. Unless you can stalk like a Victoria’s Secret supermodel or dance is stilettos like Beyoncé in one of her video clips, wearing these is asking for trouble

2 Wear a mini dresses. Shortness of dress can result indecent exposure moment when  that step that ‘wasn’t there a moment ago’ gets in the way. If you must however, at least make sure you are wearing some full coverage beneath.

3 Wear a long dresses can also be problematic. Hello trip factor.

4 Wear anything that is complicated to do up. Again, this goes for both of you ladies and gentlemen. This includes those tiny invisible zips that, button-up flies, or anything overly strappy. We all know this will end in tears, particularly after that 60th trip to the bathroom.
